Sean Devlin is currently pursuing his Masters of Music in Trombone Performance
at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. He graduated
cum laude from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, in May 2004 with
a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance. His teachers have included James
T. Miller and Randy Kohlenberg.
While at UNCG, Mr. Devlin occupied the position of principal trombone in the
symphony orchestra as well as having played with the wind ensemble. He played
bass trombone in the brass ensemble and jazz ensemble as well. Mr. Devlin has
also performed sophomore, junior, and senior recitals encompassing literature
from various periods for the alto and tenor trombones.
In the summer of 2002, Mr. Devlin auditioned for the annual National Wind Ensemble
and won the position of principal trombone and subsequently performed with the
ensemble in New York's Carnegie Hall. In the summer of 2004, he won the spot
of principal trombone in the Catania Festival Orchestra, based in Catania, Sicily.
With this ensemble, Mr. Devlin participated in a one month tour, performing
concerts throughout Sicily and Calabria.
During the academic year of 2003/04, Mr. Devlin auditioned for and won the university
concerto competition at UNCG and performed Joseph Turrin's "Fandango"
for trumpet and trombone with the symphony orchestra. He has also performed
solo pieces on bass and tenor trombone at the North Carolina Trombone Festival,
held annually at UNCG.
Mr. Devlin is a substitute with the Greensboro Symphony and the Winston-Salem
Symphony orchestra and has held the position of Principal Trombone in the Greensboro
Philharmonia and the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. Also, Mr. Devlin performs
frequently with the Greensboro Community Theatre in their annual Broadway series,
held in the Carolina Theatre in historic Downtown Greensboro. He currently plays
bass trombone with the Graduate Brass Quintet and the Graduate Trombone Quartet
at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
Mr. Devlin is currently a freelance trombonist and private instructor in the
Greensboro - Winston-Salem - High Point triad area. As an arranger, Mr. Devlin
has begun bringing pieces from many different genres (including classical and
popular music) into the trombone choir, trombone quartet, and brass quintet
repertory. Some of his arrangements are available for download at his website.
Mr. Devlin can be heard playing bass trombone on the UNCG Jazz Ensemble recordings
One Finger Snap (2001), Stronger than Dirt (2002), Back to Basie (2003), Honestly
(2003), and the new recording being released in the fall of 2004, featuring
jazz legend Dewey Redman. He can also be heard on the UNCG Wind Ensemble recordings
Equus! (2001), Internal Combustion! (2001), and A Tribute to Sousa - Live! (2001).
